Mixx – The Social Media News Site You Should Join Today
Social media marketing is currently the buzz word amongst internet marketers, with social news sites receiving ever greater attention from online marketers.
The leading site is Digg, which had a proposed $200 million sale to Google fall through fairly recently, but there are a number of lesser-known general interest and niche social news sites. Two examples of these niche sites are Killer Startups and Sphinn.
As a marketer it’s hugely advantageous to develop a strong presence on a general interest media site, enabling yout to leverage your influence further down the line for whatever projects that you’re involved in. To do this you need to become a power user but to become a power user on Digg now would be almost a full-time job in itself.
Therefore if you’re looking to build a strong presence on social media sites Mixx has to be on your list. Why?
- It’s a popular and fast-growing site with a strong fan base. You only have to look at it’s growth rate compared to Reddit to see that Mixx is on the way up, and fast.
- Mixx is on the way up but it’s still relatively easy to become a power user. Many users are fairly new and it doesn’t require a monumental effort to catch up quickly.
- Mixx has a nice facility whereby you can join or create specific groups. This creates a fantastic networking opportunity where as an online business or a blog you can create a group at Mixx and interact frequently with its members, who will often be your readers.
- If you run a niche website or blog the likelihood of reaching the front page on a general social news site is a long shot. The content is also frequently likely to be too specific for one of the sub-categories. However, the groups facility on Mixx offers an excellent avenue for niche content to be promoted and given visibility amongst those who are interested.
There’s a criticism of Digg that users are agressive towards many stories, are quick to bury them, and the quality of traffic from Digg is very poor. In its early days this gave traffic from social media sites a bad name but Mixx doesn’t suffer from this problem. The quantity of traffic is lower but the quality is a lot higher. It’ll be interesting to see whether this remains the case as Mixx becomes increasingly popular.
One note of caution though – Mixx is addictive. The ability to join and create groups, the fairly high possibility of your submitted stories reaching the front page, and the clever karma system, where you’re given karma for various actions, including submitting and voting on stories along with making comments, all make Mixx a place where hours can easily drift by.
