The people who get sent this mail are targeted by a specific criteria, for example the area they live in or their age. Many of the direct mail advertising campaigns will involve sending free gifts, pre approved credit card applications, catalogues and so on to potential customers. The mail that is sent out is created to generate a positive response from the recipient.
Many businesses will use this method as there are bulk mailing discounts that they can take advantage of. It is estimated that in the USA alone there are over 90 billion pieces of this type of mail that are sent each year.
